It uses a so called tree map for visualisation. Each file is shown as a rectangle with an area proportional to the file's size. Files in the same folder appear together, but their placement is otherwise arbitrary.

Xcode and other Apple developer tools (esp. the command line tools, and the Graphics Tools package; Xcode has a built-in menu that takes you to a list with downloads: Xcode > Open Developer Tool > More Developer Tools...) Older Xcode versions installed stuff into /Developer and /usr/bin
Just point GrandPerspective to the directory you want to examine and it gives you a quick visualization of all the files therein by size (i.e., the biggest chunks are your biggest files). If you find something you don't need, you can click the Reveal button to see it in Finder and send it packing. Additionally, you can drill down on directories to get a closer look at the smaller files, which you can probably tell seem minuscule next to the big boys. Windows users, check out previously mentioned WinDirStat, and all users can check out more on visualizing your hard drive usage. GrandPerspective is free, Mac OS X only.
